Shelter activities
Aims & objectives
A brief history

Shelter: One of the main problems is that the street children are rootless. In order to help them, Shelter keeps its doors open 24 hours so that the child can walk in any time to rest in a safe environment.

Bathing and washing: Water is a rare and precious commodity for a street child. Here we provide enough water to meet the needs of basic cleanliness.

Medical aid: The street child is most vulnerable when he is sick. Having nowhere to go and no one to care for him, he remains helpless on the street. In this context, Shelter has developed a method whereby the street boys themselves take care of the ailing, by attending to his needs and taking him to hospital, etc. Till he is totally on his feet, Shelter sees to all his needs.

Canteen: Children need food that is fresh, wholesome and affordable. It is not possible to find all this on the street. Therefore, we have started a canteen, managed by the boys, where good food is served at a subsidised rate.

Rapid industrialisation in Europe during the last century resulted in many drop outs, among them were a sizable portion of youth and children, living on the streets. Don Bosco, a visionary responded to this social situation by educating and caring for the abandoned youth and children with his system of Reason, Religion and Loving kindness.

Today, a century later, the Salesian Society rededicates itself to the same cause as it is faced with the similar situation of drop outs among youth and children surviving on the streets. It took concrete in an open house for street children, during the centenary celebrations of Don Bosco's death.

Target group:
Our target is limited to children who are roofless and rootless. That is: without shelter and having no adult guardianship.

What the shelter is not: Shelter does not give away food, clothing or anything that others don't want. It is our belief that the Shelter does not need pity. It is not a beggar home.

What the Shelter is: To provide an open house for street boys of Mumbai city. To accept at any time and to keep an open house for any child, minor or juvenile, in difficult circumstances who have either run away from home or are without parental care and is surviving on the streets of Mumbai.

To reach children on the street through mobile and satellite centers: and to program finances and administer them.

To protect the child from all forms of exploitation from society. To inculcate in the street children the principles of morality, democracy and secularism, and to promote the ideas beneficial to them individually, irrespective of religion, cast or language.

To make society aware of the problems, causes, needs and the social, psychological, economic situation of the children through seminars, media and other social out reach programs.

Until such time as the street children are able to stand on their own feet, to provide shelter, whereby they develop a sense of belonging, have social and emotional security, and receive protection from the hostile environment, simultaneously they are enabled to support themselves financially through their own constructive effort.

Monthly Melas: To organize monthly mass gathering of street children with the objectives of building fellowship among them. To make them aware of existing services, to cater to their healthy games, entertainments and group work.

Counseling: Each child receives individual counseling.

Education: Formal education is a distant dream for many of them. We endeavour to help each child reach his best potential.

Self employment: The boys are industrious and ingenious in earning their living. We encourage them by providing finance in the form of small credit facilities and also provide the know-how of starting a small business.
