SPONSORED WALK In June the SVP junior branch at Blessed Edward Oldcorne School organised a sponsored walk of 7 miles on the Malvern Hills. Inspired and encouraged by Frank Tota & Win Taylor and their helpers the young people raised over £500. A cheque for that amount was presented to Father Barnabe when the head teacher Sean Devlin visited India with a party of pupils during the summer break and called in at Lonavla to meet the boys and hear about the groundbreaking rehabilitation work being carried out there.

Win Taylor with some of her helpers who made the event so much fun for all those taking part. Win said, ”I was totally amazed by the dedicated involvement of the young people.”

Celebrate opening night at the Festival Ceilidh with popular local caller Ian Craigan and the lively Horizon Lights folk band. The Amaranth Dance Troupe will entertain during the interval. Proceeds to Mumbai charity for street Children. Bar available. St Helen's is the ideal summer dance venue - the redundant church is an atmospheric space of cool stone & a high roof, right in the city centre & easy to reach by foot, bus or car. Enjoyable for all ages and abilities!

The success of Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire has made many more people aware of the plight of street children in India and around the world. Some local people are doing what they can to support a charity that help to improve the lives of such children – by dancing!

“The end of the film is a wonderful Bollywood-style dance sequence,” says organiser Andrew Rothery. “It isn’t something that many folk in Worcester do – so we’ve organised a Barn Dance instead.” Mike Lloyd, local representative for the Don Bosco Shelter in Mumbai, is looking forward to the event. “We’re delighted that the opening dance event of the Worcester Festival is also supporting such a good cause. Through the shelter children with no future are gaining skills, getting off drugs and being reunited with families.”

In addition to the traditional British folk music provided by Horizon Lights Ceilidh Band there will be a touch of the orient thanks to a special appearance by Amaranth Dance Troupe who will be belly dancing and giving all-comers a chance to join in.

Festival

The event was amazing fun thanks to the band and the ever resourceful Ian Craigan. There was a balloon race and a heads & tails game that had everyone holding their sides.

Total raised, ticket sales, bar sales and donations etc £400 and counting.

The belly dancing was totally authentic. Come next year and learn how to do it !!!!!

A supporter from Woburn . . . .

My son Tom has just completed a golf marathon and he wishes to make a donation to Shelter. I myself visited shelter last year and loved the work I saw. Could you let me know who we make the cheque out to. It may take a few weeks to get all the money in but it should be around £400. Thanks for your help. Helene Blick

On the first of July I succsessfully completed a golf marathon, playing all 3 courses at Woburn Golf Club in one day. As it turned out it just happened to be the hottest day of the year! I started at 7am and with a few gaps to take in water and food completed the 54 holes by 5pm. My timing was great but my score not so great. I normally play off 4 and my gross score for the 3 rounds was 237 and the prize for guessing my stroke score was shared between two of my sponsors. I had a great if exhausting day.

RubbishBinWhat a Rubbish Job!

Having tried most things in thirty years of marriage, Allyson and Ian Craigan thought that a suitable way to mark their wedding anniversary would be to organise the litter picking team at the Port Eliot Festival in glorious St Germans, Cornwall. This annual literary festival is home to 4000 people for four days and they generate a fair bit of rubbish. As Ally said, "Sometimes it was only the thought that the fee of £500 would be going to support the work of Shelter Don Bosco that kept me going!" As well as the festival organiser's contribution, a bucket collection following Ralph McTell's performance (which appropriately ended with his famous 'Streets of London') raised over £100 and Lady St Germans is making a donation to the charity out of proceeds from an 'open house' held during the weekend. The picture shows Ally along with fellow pickers Kersten, Jake and Jess; along with several other folk they gave up their time in order to help support Don Bosco.
